Fort Worth Residents Take Action To Oppose Zoning Commission Decision To Bring Gambling Poker Room To Hulen Pointe Shopping Center
In Two Days Over 400 People Sign Petition Calling On Mayor andCity Council To Reject Gambling Poker Room

FORT WORTH – Dr. Jared Williams, candidate for Fort Worth City Council District 6, has joined with residents across neighborhoods in Fort Worth to call on the Mayor and City Councilmembers to reject the unanimous decision by the Zoning Commission to approve a conditional use permit that would establish a 24 hour 7 day a week Poker Room in the Hulen Pointe Shopping Mall.

“The unanimous decision by the Fort Worth Zoning Commission members has sent shock waves through neighborhoods across Fort Worth. In two days, over 400 people have joined our Change.org petition to demand that this approval process stop immediately. Residents are appalled that the conditional use permit process would be used to usher in gambling establishments into Fort Worth. This is far too important a discussion about the future of Fort Worth to use this zoning process for approval” said Dr. Williams.

The Zoning Commission made their unanimous decision to support the application of Hulen Pointe Retail LLC for this conditional use permit. The site is currently zoned as “G” Intensive Commercial.

Of the 400 plus signatures in support of Dr. Williams’ petition, many individuals have posted public comments with their signatures. LeAnne Bernard wrote the following:

“We’ve lived here for over 30 years and this proposed Poker Room is unacceptable for our neighborhood. It is too close to churches, schools and homes. We shop, dine and go to the movie theater with our family (including young children) right next to where this 24 Hr. Poker Room would be located. This absolutely is not what this area needs.”
Area resident Amanda Manis added the following:
“I am not happy about this. We live in one of the close neighborhoods, but I found out about this zoning change through neighbors, it feels like they are trying to sneak this in. There is inadequate parking, and the noise from a 24hr business right next to residential areas is not okay.”
“I believe the overwhelming support for the petition to stop this approval process immediately shows there is no support for bringing a gambling poker room into Fort Worth neighborhoods. I believe that this process demonstrates the failure by city leaders to be fully transparent and actively engage neighborhoods and residents on crucial issues. This is why people lose faith in our city leaders and I hope they will listen to residents and reject this horrible decision by the Zoning Commission and staff” expressed Dr. Williams.

Dr. Williams will be presenting the petition and making comments about the Zoning Commission vote to support the Poker Room on Tuesday morning during the City Council meeting.
